As 2015 comes to an end, there will be many articles and discussions of events, products or ideas that will be game changers in the year to come. Personally, I’ve never been much of a believer in the idea of a “silver bullet” – a singular strategy, event, or action that somehow changes the course of a business or activity in one fell swoop. In fact, the search for the silver bullet is one of the easiest ways to get distracted from actually making progress on solving serious problems.
In my new book, Xbox Revisited: A Game Plan for Corporate and Civic Renewal, I focus on simplicity as the secret to attacking complex problems; instead of a hunt in the haystack for the one needle that will work, leaders need to develop a coherent strategy with simple priorities that can help untie whatever Gordian knots they are facing.
With all of that said, there is an issue that I think will have a major impact next year. My focal point for 2016 is not a new product, new advertising model, or even something from the business world. Instead, I want to focus on the world of geopolitics and the tidal wave of problems that is the Middle East. A Gordian knot indeed and one that needs to be addressed now in a meaningful way…
